My very first Zine.

They say you learn something new every day..... I can tell you that at my grand old age of 52 there seems to be loads of things that I have never heard of before. Like a 'Zine'.

Zine

Description

A zine is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine. Zines are the product of either a single person or of a very small group, and are popularly photocopied into physical prints for circulation. Wikipedia

During our Creative Practise lesson earlier this week I made my very first Zine.

Now, it has to be noted that I cannot draw.  Give me a 2D character to put on a birthday cake - no problem. But give me a pencil and paper and ask me to draw something, then no can do!   But I don't shy away from this fact, I am happy to tell people that I cannot draw... and I genuinely mean it!  I am also happy to embarrass myself by having a go.  :)

My style was once described as 'Naïve' during a glass fusing class.. I have happily adopted this title and think it suits me. Although I think 'Childish' suits me better.

Anyway.....so, the brief was to draw a self-portrait or an object close by.   I chose my mug that was sitting near to me on the table.  Easy enough, I thought, straight lines, a bit of shading, easy peasy.

We had ten minutes to draw our mug. I was finished in about three!  So I drew the coaster as well. That took another 30 seconds.

What a masterpiece!  (you will see I have many 'masterpieces' throughout this blog post!)

Drawing number two was to draw the same object but without the outline.

Em, yeah! I don't think I am going to win any drawing competitions any time soon!

Number three was to draw the object in one continual line without taking the pencil off the paper.

No room for errors here...

Drawing with dots was the task for sketch number four.

These are getting worse aren't they?

Number five was to draw the mug without looking at the paper.  So once you had taken your pencil off the paper there was no telling where it would end up again.  As you can see!

For drawing number six we had to draw the background only and not draw the object at all.  That was quite an interesting challenge. It made me think hard.

For number seven we were asked to swap hands and draw the same object with our non favourable hand.  Now this was quite telling for me as I am right handed but tend to favour my left quite a bit.  I often wonder if I was left handed when young and at school they kept swapping me over.  I am quite ambidextrous in my day to day tasks.

And for the last challenge we had to draw the object again but only in one minute!  So a scribble really.

Although my drawings are utterly rubbish, I quite enjoyed the challenge of making this Zine. It's something I will do again with my Grandchildren as I think they would really enjoy it.

So, for the last part I decided to make a little animation of it all together.

When I heard about this assignment I smiled to myself - improvisation, it's what I do all of the time.  I have an idea, I don't hav...
